FICTION

History of Love / Nicole Krauss
BCD, FIC, LT
What is real, what is memory? In Nicole Krauss’ novel, we come to know the octogenarian Leo Gursky as he affirms first his existence by the little mundane circumstances of life such as spilling a cup of coffee and later as he is reconnected to his past through a young girl named Alma, the namesake of his first and only love and to the novel he wrote and lost years ago as World War II made its way to Poland. We learn about Leo almost as if we are part of an archeological dig, discovering after each layer of his life is revealed, how passion ignited by true, everlasting love can prevail, persevere and triumph in the face of the calamities of war and the ravages of time.
(Marion Ashen Lusardi, Director, CHE)

Honestly Dearest, You’re Dead / Jack Frederickson
FIC
This second book in the Dek Elstrom mysteries series is set partially on the west coast of Michigan, with a knock-out ending for mystery lovers.
(Jackie H. from RSV)

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet: A Novel / Jamie Ford
BCD, EB, FIC, LT
This is a World War II novel about Japanese internment. It has a piece of history mixed with everyday life. It was a good read.
(Dorothy from CHE)

The internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II comes alive in this moving story of an American-Chinese boy whose only friend is a Japanese-American girl. This is one of those perfect books.
(Marilynn from MPL)

This book is a World War II love story of a Chinese boy and a Japanese girl and the struggle they experience to be together.
(Emily from EPL)

FICTION

Juliet, Naked / Nick Hornby
BCD, FIC, LT
Very good!
(Lindsay Payne from TPL)

The Lace Reader / Barry Brunonia
BCD, EB, LT, FIC
I enjoyed this complex tale of women in New England and how lace reading comes into play in the twists and turns of their lives.
(Kara from CMN)

The Leisure Seeker /Micheal Zadoorian
FIC, LT
This book was so wonderful. An elderly couple (he is senile and she has cancer) takes one last cross country trip in their RV (the Leisure Seeker) from Michigan to Disneyland. Along the way, they relive their life and vacation memories with their slides, having adventures along the way. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
(Librarian from TPL)

This book is a very different read. Sentimental yet strong, tentative yet brave. The two main characters and their life together were very interesting to read about.
(Circulation clerk from SHL)

The Little Stranger / Sarah Waters
BCD, FIC, LT
There are none who actually witness each incident as it occurs at Hundreds Hall, a crumbling manor house in the post WWII British countryside. From the tiniest unexplained occurances such as the repeated falling of a dish towel to the shocking attacks on the inhabitants, the only constant element is the house itself. Or is it? As one reviewer stated, “Waters has made the old bones dance again.”
