Jungvolk: The Story of a Boy Defending Hitler's Third Reich / Wilhelm Gehlen
MeLCat
This is a great book from the German point of view, based on the experiences of a member of the Hitler Youth. Gives the reader a real sense of what daily living was like under Nazi power. The best part was when he and his mother went to visit a sick aunt in Bastogne three days before the biggest battle of the War started; they were stuck in the middle of it and the author befriended both American and German soldiers. A fun read that shows a big war through the eyes of a small boy.

Life on the Line: A Chef's Story of Chasing Greatness, Facing Death, and Redefining the Way We Eat / Grant Achatz
BCD, NONFIC
This biography is a fascinating and inspiring story of a young chef - Grant Achatz - who grew up in Saint Clair County, Michigan. He began working in his parent's diner at the age of five and has gone on to become one of the most innovative young American chefs earning a variety of awards. He is now the owner of two restaurants in the Chicago area: Alinea and Next. Most amazingly is that while establishing his second restaurant he was diagnosed with tongue cancer. Doctors recommended removing his tongue -- this was unacceptable to him as a chef. He found a doctor willing to avoid surgery and in favor of extensive chemo and radiation. He continues to work in his restaurants and his cancer is in remission.

Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void / Mary Roach
BCD, EB, NONFIC
This is a fun, informative and amusing look at the history and challenges faced by the space program through the decades. Recommended for anyone who ever wondered what it is really like to be an astronaut.

The Pacific / Hugh Ambrose
BCD, LT, NONFIC
This is a great story from different perspectives of a few Marines and a Navy pilot as they fight through the Pacific Theater of WWII. It is very enlightening and empowering.

NON-FICTION

The Reading Promise: My Father and the Books We Shared / Alice Ozma
LT, NONFIC
This is a touching memoir about a father's commitment to read aloud to his 9 year old daughter for 100 days. Their "Reading Streak" makes 100 days, 1,000 days, and ends 3,218 days later when she goes away to college!
(Marilynn from MPL)

The Retreat: Hitler's First Defeat / Michael Jones
NONFIC
This is a great book about Hitler's drive and eventual failure to capture Moscow in 1941. It is filled with both German and Russian accounts to help demonstrate the ferocity of this battle. Frostbite, starvation, wounds, and homesickness will jump from the pages by those who suffered such a hopeless fate. Read it during winter and you won't think Michigan winters are so bad after all.

Teacher Man / Frank McCourt
BCD, LT, NONFIC
This fascinating memoir by the author of Angela's Ashes presents a first-hand account of the trials and tribulations of teaching English to high school students in New York City. McCourt's views on public education are thought provoking.
(Ed from CHE)

The Wave: In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean / Susan Casey
BCD, EB, LT, NONFIC
One of those great nonfiction books made for fiction readers. It is part science and part thrill ride. The reader learns how little we actually know about our oceans. Fascinating!
